Ken Schilz on the Issues
The future of my community and the future of Western Nebraska are very important to me, and I believe the legislature offers an opportunity to make a real difference.
I am running for the legislature because I can speak to the critical issues we’re faced with and I have the experience to help find answers. For the past eight years, I’ve worked closely with Senator Erdman on key issues, and I understand the importance of seeking input from the community and being available to the constituents of the 47th District.
There are hard choices ahead, and you can trust that I have the knowledge and experience to speak up for what’s important to you and fight for our share. You can also be sure that I will value your input on certain issues so important and complex that they require your knowledge and experience to help find the answers.
Above all, you will always know where I stand on the issues and trust that I will do what I say I’ll do. Let me tell you a little about my priorities:
Conserve Our Water
Water is our most valuable resource and
we can do more to manage our water for
the sustainability of the aquifer. We
must allocate the resources necessary to
identify supplies, identify uses, and
then manage the resource accordingly.
New technologies and new management
scenarios will enable Nebraska to
continue to be a leader in agriculture
production and water management.
Lower the Tax Burden
Because we are taxing people, jobs, and
employers right out of the state, the
legislature must look for new ways to
reduce taxes across the board. As your
senator, I will oppose new tax increases
and look for alternatives for needed
school and road funding. Economic
development and incentives should be
implemented to help keep young people
here, grow the tax base, and lessen the
overall burden.
Increase Economic
Development
The legislature should understand the
different economic needs in Western
Nebraska. Entrepreneurship, investment,
and new agricultural opportunities are
critical to the revitalization of our
economies. Our communities must band
together to turn the tide of out
migration and increase recruitment
efforts to keep our best and brightest
in the state.
Provide A Quality
Education
When it comes to education, our kids
deserve the best. In a global economy,
Nebraska schoolchildren need every
advantage to compete. I am committed to
providing our kids with a top-quality
education by ensuring that the funding
goes where it’s needed most – to our
teachers and classrooms.
Protect Life
I believe that life begins at conception
and will work to protect the rights of
the unborn. I oppose the use of
embryonic stem cells for therapeutic
cloning and research purposes.
Stop Illegal
Immigration
Illegal immigration is a burden on our
culture, our schools, and our health
care services. We have to remove the
incentives for illegal immigration by
denying state and public benefits like
in-state tuition to those who have
broken the law.
Uphold the Death
Penalty
I believe in the death penalty for the
most heinous crimes. The legislature
must find a way to continue the death
penalty in a manner consistent with our
constitution, and I would support a bill
to make lethal injection the means of
execution in Nebraska.
